Astrofest Astrophotography Curator Call for Expressions of Interest

Astronomy WA and Astrofest are inviting expressions of interest from the WA astrophotography community to be involved in curating the annual Astrophotography exhibition.

Background

The exhibition has been part of Astrofest since its modern inception in 2009, and has grown to see over 200 images entered each year by talented WA Astrophotographers. Astrofest is a predominantly volunteer run event, coordinated by ICRAR on behalf of Astronomy WA and the key funding partners, Curtin University, ICRAR, Scitech and CSIRO. Coordination support is provided by Scitech and the Astronomical Group of WA. The curator predominantly works with the Astrofest Coordinator at ICRAR. You can learn more about the Astrophotography Exhibition online.

Curator Role

The new curator would work closely with the Astrofest committee to organise entries and judging, liaise with the Astrofest coordinator to organise printing and other requirements, and take responsibility for setting up, hosting and packing down the exhibition on the night of the Perth Astrofest. We estimate the time commitment of the Astrophotography Curator to be approximately 50-60 hours in total.

For more details of required tasks, please see the scope of work.

Term

Initially one year (2019-2020), with potential for ongoing curatorship with mutual agreement between the curator and the Astrofest committee. A Service Level Agreement (or similar) for the initial term will be entered into upon appointment of the Astrofest Curator.

Payment

An honorarium of $2,000 (ex GST) is paid to acknowledge the curator’s work each year. The curator (or the curator's astronomy-related business) will be considered a supporter of Astrofest and will be included in promotional materials alongside other supporters and sponsors (such as in printed materials as well as on the website). In addition, the Astrofest Astrophotography Curator has the option to be involved in the touring of the exhibition within WA for further paid opportunities.

Application Process

To express your interest in being the new Astrophotography Curator please send us a cover letter detailing any relevant experience and why you would be a good addition to the Astrofest team to info@astronomywa.com.au, addressed to the Astrofest Coordinator and Astronomy WA Co-Chair Kirsten Gottschalk, by June 21st. Selection of a new curator will be undertaken by representatives from the Astrofest committee and astrophotography exhibition past judges.
