Description

Are you ready for a marathon of astronomical proportions?  Bring your telescope and join fellow astronomers in a test of stamina and willpower for the 2009 Messier Marathon. 

Charles Messier's catalogue of 110 objects provides a night long observing challenge, celebrated around the world.  With about 90 objects visible from the Southern Hemisphere, March 28th is the best time during the International Year of Astronomy, to view most of the Messier catalogue.

The 110 Messier Objects

 There will be a spit roast available from Rocko's at 5.00pm, $7 per head.  Paper plates,plastic cutlery and plastic cups will be provided.  Ice creams, fruit juices etc available from Rocko.  All you need to do is bring your own salad and drinks.


RSVP:  Essential for both Spit Roast and Messier Marathon - space is limited.

Start:    Setup telescopes by 5.00pm
Please note: Messier Marathon participants are required to stay the entire duration.  This is an overnight event and as such, is unsuitable for children.

Located about an hours drive from Perth ; Golden Grove Observatory plays host to both radio and optical astronomy.

Tucked away in an orange orchard, the Golden Grove Observatory is one of the best and most accessible commercial observatories in Perth . Playing host to the Astronomical Group of Western Australia (AGWA) and the Western Australian Radio Observatory (WARO), Golden Grove Observatory gives the public a unique perspective on the differences in observing styles.

The observatory is open to the public between Spring and Autumn, with viewings on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from sunset. Bookings are essential, so please contact them through their website, or in person.
