Our thriving State has plenty of astronomy related activities to satisfy the most curious young minds. The following list is a sample of some of the educational venues available to school students around WA.
Gingin Observatory

Gingin Observatory is right next door to the Gravity Discovery Centre and together, both centres offer interesting, entertaining and inspiring science activities for educational excursions. Suitable for school years K-12 and Scouts of all ages. Gingin Observatory is one of the highlights of WA tourism and was even nominated in the 2010 Tourism Awards. A must see for all Sandgropers and visitors alike.
Gravity Discovery Centre

The Gravity Discovery Centre (GDC) is the public arm of the Australian International Gravitational Observatory (AIGO). Being much more than a tourist destination, the GDC is a cathedral of science, with soaring ceilings, magnificent murals and stunning exhibits. It is an unmissable sight.
Perth Observatory

The Perth Observatory is Australia’s oldest continually operating observatory, having provided Western Australians with an international-class research and educational facility. In addition to its research contribution, the star-gazing and information sessions for the public are invaluable.
Horizon - The Planetarium

The indoor theatre that presents high tech multi-media shows about our night sky, the solar system and beyond. The digital projection system accurately displays stars, planets and other celestial bodies on its dome screen, allowing you to journey through space without ever leaving your seat.
Astronomy Education Services

Drawing on a total of 10 years experience heading up the Public Outreach and Education at the Perth Observatory, lecturing for ECU Joondalup, UWA Extensions and other education institutions, AES guarantees accurate, up to date information delivered at the appropriate level of education.
Spacedome

The Spacedome is a small transportable planetarium, consisting of an inflatable dome, a star projector and other assorted pieces of multi media equipment which allow the presenter to take you on a unique sight and sound experience exploring the night sky. The is held up entirely by air – providing an interesting science experience in itself.
The Zadko Telescope

The Zadko Telescope is a robotic optical telescope providing a unique opportunity for high school students to get involved in the world of astronomy research. Perth has been chosen as to host the Zadko Telescope, due to its unique viewing position on the globe - a truly great asset for WA astronomy.
CosmoDome Mobile Planetarium

The films which are shown inside the CosmoDome are the same big budget productions played at major museums and planetariums throughout the world. The mobile nature of the CosmoDome gives students at both metro and country schools easy access to these shows.

... Just saw the most bizarre deep red glow in the sky, It's about 11.30 PM here in kalgoorlie. I glanced up to see a vast swathe of the night sky illuminated, I watched it for about 20 seconds or so before it became dim and vanished in a few seconds. It was probably at around 40 degrees to the horizon and i was looking west towards Perth, Couldn't believe my eyes. |
