The Perth Observatory is Australia’s oldest continually operating observatory, having provided Western Australians with an international-class research and educational facility.

Being the observational centre of astronomy within Western Australia, the Perth Observatory has a rich history in scientific research, astronomy education and public outreach, as well as a strong drive to ensure that this level of excellence continues.

Over the many years of conducting world-class research, the observatory has contributed to a number of important discoveries, and developed a number of long-standing collaboratory links. These links have allowed the Perth Observatory to be in a position to contribute to a number of large-scale, worldwide research projects, including:

  • Looking for anomalies in gravitational microlensing and planetary transit monitoring, through the PLANET project.
  • Continual research and observations of comets, in conjunction with partners at the Lowell Observatory, and the University of Maryland, USA.
  • Monitoring changes in variable stars, as part of the Whole Earth Telescope group, which many sites around the world.
  • Tracking, monitoring and detecting minor bodies (asteroids, comets, and other small objects), in association with the IAU Minor Planet Centre.

In addition to the world-class research, Perth Observatory is also one of the most active astronomy education groups in WA. There are regular tours, lectures, talks and star viewing nights hosted at the observatory, and a number of off-site activities, held in conjunction with any number of the astronomy education groups in WA.

The Perth Observatory also provides a large number of astronomy related information services, including media and press releases, general and topic specific information kits, as well as general information, like sunrise and sunset times.

To get in touch with the astronomers from the Perth Observatory, or to find out more about the facilities and programs they have please visit their website, or call their Astronomy Information Line on (08) 9293 8109.
